The Three Stars of the Week
1. RW Brendan Gallagher maintains his place at the top of the weekly honours list with another week of MVP contributions to his Vancouver Giants team. After going without a point in the first game of a back to back series where his team won 3-2, Gallagher powered his team to victory in the second game with a four-point performance. Gallagher scored one goal and assisted on the 3 other regulation-time goals by his team in a 5-4 shootout win where he ended his night by scoring the winning goal in the shootout. Gallagher’s services would soon come into demand again on Friday night against the Calgary Hitmen, scoring his team’s first goal to tie the game at 1, than scoring the critical tying goal with less than four minutes remaining in the game to force overtime, than an eventual shootout win by his team. Gallagher was held pointless in an eventual 5-2 loss, but Gallagher’s scoring prowess over the week helped get his team four essential points to hold their place as 1st in their division. Gallagher continues his stand at 6th overall in WHL scoring with 36 goals, 36 assists and is tied for 2nd overall in goals. Gallagher’s career-best mark of 41 goals, 40 assists in a season is easily within reach with seventeen games left on his schedule.
2. D Alexei Yemelin had his best scoring performance in his KHL career over two games, scoring three goals and adding one assist to leap to 11th overall in defensive scoring in the KHL. Yemelin began his week by scoring the first goal in what became an unchallenged five-goal comeback from a 0-2 deficit by his Ak Bars Kazan team and finished the game off by scoring the fifth goal of the game as well, it was Yemelin’s first two-goal game of his KHL career. Yemelin would participate in an even more surprising comeback by his team later in the week, assisting on the 3rd goal of a 6-goal comeback after falling behind 4-0, than buried the insurance marker to make the game 6-4. Yemelin’s eleven goals this season amount to more than he had scored in all of his previous professional seasons in Russia combined. His fourteen assists on his season are more than he’s had combined in his three previous seasons.
3. G Karri Ramo is having a season a goalie in any league dreams of having. Ramo enjoyed another perfect week, collecting two wins by recording identical 22-save performances with a 2.00 Goals Against Average and .917 save percentage. Ramo continues to dominate the wins column in the KHL, with a record of 31-6-4 on his season, he is 2nd overall in the KHL with a GAA of 2.01, 6th in save percentage at .924 and has seven more wins than his closest competitor. However his week was marred by suffering an as-yet undisclosed injury that had him placed on Injured Reserve by his Avangard Omsk team. Omsk’s position as 1st in the KHL owes much to Ramo’s play, he’s been in goal for 80% of their wins this season. Ramo also has 10 more wins and sixteen fewer regulation losses compared to his previous season in the KHL in two fewer games played.
Worthy Mentions: C Michaƫl Bournival added two goals and an assist to his scoring totals on the week. D Jarred Tinordi after a slow start to his season has 4 assists in his last 5 games. C Ryan White snapped a 15-game goal drought with his first game-winning goal of the season. Bubble prospect G Peter Delmas remains undefeated since being placed with the ECHL Wheeling Nailers with an 8-0-0 record with impressive stats such as a 1.88GAA and .941 save %.
Question Marks: C Louis Leblanc’s scoring slump has extended to five games. LW Andrew Conboy remains on IR with a knee injury. D Brendon Nash aside from his 4-point performance on Jan. 21st has not scored in 9 of his last 10 games. C Ben Maxwell and RW Aaron Palushaj despite being looked to carry offence in Hamilton each has just two points each in their last 5 games. RW Maxim Trunev has 1 point in his last 19 KHL games. RW Danny Kristo is currently recovering from frostbite on his right foot, but is said to be in fair condition with use of all of his extremities. G Robert Mayer has only had two starts since the New Year.
