The Three Stars of the Week:
1. C Louis Leblanc had one point in his final two World Junior Championship games, assisting on a goal in the Gold Medal Match, he finished the Tournament a +6, second-best amongst forwards and finished at a point per game track in the Tournament despite his line assignments never lasting more than two games, or sometimes even through one. Leblanc returned to play two games with the Montreal Juniors before his week was done, he notched two assists with the team as they came back from a 0-3 deficit that became a 6-4 win and then added his 14th goal of the season in a 5-3 loss the following day. Leblanc was notably one of the strongest players along the boards during the tournament, constantly in control of the puck or taking control of it, it often required him being double-teamed to take him off of it.
2. RW Danny Kristo has continued to take large steps of late to put the slump he was mired in for the first two months of his season aside. Kristo scored a goal and three assists over the weekend, his empty-net goal eventually became the game-winner as his North Dakota team was scored on after he notched what was believed to be an insurance marker. Kristo’s three assists came in a dominant 8-0 victory the previous evening. Kristo is now enjoying a 6-game point streak of two goals and nine assists, his early season struggles may finally be behind him.
3. G Karri Ramo continues to be one of the most consistent and resilient netminders in the KHL this season, he added two more wins to his record including a shutout, he has only lost one game in his last 10 starts and has only six regulation losses on his season. Ramo’s KHL team Avangard Omsk is now 2nd overall in their conference thanks to his impressive comeback run as a legitimate goaltender. Ramo now holds spots in the top 5 of all goaltending categories, he is 1st in wins with 24, posts the 2nd-best Goals Against Average record with 1.94, 4th overall in save percentage at .928 and has 5 shutouts on his season, only 1 behind the league lead.
Worthy Mentions: RW Alexander Avtsin has returned from injury and added an assist in his 2nd game back. D Mathieu Carle returned from injury to the Hamilton roster, scoring a goal and assist in his first three games back. LW Andrew Conboy has matched his previous season scoring totals in 35 fewer GP. D Brendon Nash added two assists to his scoring totals on the week, he is pacing for a .5PPG season in the AHL and leads all Hamilton defencemen in points. D Alexei Yemelin added two assists to his scoring in the KHL in the past week, his team is currently 1st overall in the KHL. D Mac Bennett scored his first NCAA goal over the weekend and had an assist in his game as well. C Michael Bournival continues to the backbone of offence for the Shawinigan Cataractes, he scored two goals and one assist, including an overtime game-winner. C Joonas Nattinen scored no points in his final game in the World Juniors, but led his team with a 63.48% faceoff efficiency, good enough for 4th overall in the Tournament.
Question Marks: C Andreas Engqvist has been sidelined with an upper body injury that has prevented him from playing in January. LW Phillippe Lefebvre has been sidelined with a possible concussion. RW Aaron Palushaj continues to struggle with consistency, with only 3 points in his last 10 games. C Gabriel Dumont has no points in 6 games and is a -6 in his last 6GP. G Robert Mayer’s questionable play in nets this season in Hamilton with a GAA above 3 and a save percentage below .900 has left the team no choice but to play Sanford almost every night.
