The Three Stars of the Week:
1. C Ben Maxwell takes top honours as he returns to the lineup for the Hamilton Bulldogs and delivers a jolt of offence, with a goal and three assists in three games. Maxwell, previously sidelined with an upper-body injury returned in time to face the Oklahoma City Barons and scored the first goal of the game in a 3-0 victory. Maxwell would then assist on the initial Bulldogs goal, than the game-winning goal in OT to complete a comeback from 2-0 on Saturday night against the Texas Stars, he would add an assist in a losing effort against San Antonio on Sunday night. Maxwell had not played since November 17th prior to his return and has helped deliver some much-needed offence to the Bulldogs lineup.
2. C David Desharnais has worked to ensure the pace of the Bulldogs continues after the departure of scoring star Max Pacioretty, he scored a goal and three assists on the week, including a goal and assist against Oklahoma City in a 3-0 Bulldogs win and assisting on the game-tying goal against the Texas Stars on Saturday night on the way to the 3-2 overtime win, he would add an assist against San Antonio. Desharnais leads the entire AHL in assists with 28 on his season and is second overall in points in the AHL.
3. C Michael Bournival only played one game during the week due to his commitment, and unfortuate final dismissal from the 2010 World Junior Championship Evaluation Camp for Team Canada, Bournival was the final cut of the camp which speaks very well to his chances for next year’s team. There is still a chance he makes the team if there is a last-minute injury on the current Team Canada roster amongst forwards. Bournival would score two goals and one assist in his single game, a 5-4 loss for his Shawinigan Cataractes but was still selected 1st star of the game for his efforts on his return from camp.
Worthy Mentions: D Jarred Tinordi has begun to assert himself more in London, he has two assists in his last three games and has been given increasing responsibilities by the coach as the Knights look to turn their season around and was selected 3rd star of the last game he played. D Alexei Yemelin was selected to play in the Channel One Cup Tournament in the European Hockey Tour and had an assist over 3 games with an even +/- differential, Team Russia would win with three straight victories. C Louis Leblanc was selected to play for Team Canada in the Under-20 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championships, he is expected to play on the right wing of the top line. RW Alexander Avtsin broke a 7-game scoreless slump to get his 4th goal of the season. LW Andrew Conboy has matched his single-season best in goals in the AHL with two goals on his week to take his total to 8, which he did in 25 games compared to 66 in his last season. C Gabriel Dumont had his first multi-point AHL game, with three assists added to his scoring totals, he had only two assists in 25 previous games.
Question Marks: D Mathieu Carle has suffered an upper-body injury and will be out for what is expected to be 4 weeks, he missed most of the 09-10 season with shoulder surgery and missed two consecutive Canadiens training camps with injuries in 07-08 and 08-09, he may be too fragile to make the NHL. G Robert Mayer had another troublesome start in nets, allowing five goals and his save percentage on his season is at .886%. RW Aaron Palushaj continues an annoying trend of scoring slumps, with only one assist in his last 4 games. G Karri Ramo was not selected to represent Finland at the Channel One Cup, despite leading all goaltenders in the KHL in wins.
Selected to play in the IIHF Under-20 World Junior Hockey Championships:
C Louis Leblanc – Team Canada
C Joonas Nattinen – Team Finland

ReplyDeleteYou are correct, editorial lapse by myself as I travelled to MTL this week and fell a bit behind in my work and missed that.
