The Three Stars of the Week
1. D Nathan Beaulieu makes his premiere in the Three Stars selections with a rather heavy week that saw him play a total of five games in seven nights. Beaulieu’s week began representing the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League in the Subway Super Series, featuring the stars of the league against a team of select Russian junior players. Beaulieu was held off the scoresheet on Monday, but then added an assist in the second game and scored the lone shootout goal for Team QMJHL. Beaulieu than returned to the Saint John Sea Dogs to begin a three games in three night schedule. Beaulieu would pick up a single assist in the team’s win on Friday against PEI Rocket, than doubled that amount on Saturday, including an assist on the game-winning goal. Beaulieu’s final game on Sunday showed despite a heavy schedule he had kept something in reserve as he scored the opening goal of the game for Saint John, than again assisted on the game-winning goal. Beaulieu’s goal and four assists has him on the best points streak of his season, with a goal added on to his totals from the previous week he has two goals and four assists in a four game streak. Beaulieu’s six goals and eleven assists have raised him to the leading defensive scorer on his team and 8th overall in the QMJHL amongst defencemen. Beaulieu was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in the 1st round, 17th overall in the 2011 Entry Draft.
2. RW Brendan Gallagher is not letting the pressure of having to be the MVP for the Vancouver Giants distract him as he continues his march for a fifty goal in fifty game season. Gallagher’s two goals and two assists helped his team to a perfect week that saw them rise to the top of their division. After being held off the scoresheet on Wednesday, Gallagher resumed his normal habits in short order. Gallagher would score the initial tying goal against the Kelowna Rockets on Saturday night, than later marked an assist to help his team once again come from behind to tie the game in an eventual 3-2 victory. Gallagher mirrored his Saturday night scoring with another goal and assist in familiar fashion to help the Giants out of a difficult game. With the Giants down 3-1, Gallagher assisted on a goal to bring the score to 3-2, than with close to a minute remaining in the game, scored the game-tying goal to force overtime and bring about an eventual shootout victory. The Vancouver Giants have a notable record of 8-1-0 this year when Gallagher has a two-point game. Gallagher is 5th in the WHL in goals and 7th overall in points. Gallagher was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in the 5th round, 147th overall in the 2010 Entry Draft.
3. RW Alexander Avtsin after a notable slump to the start of his season, the skilled winger broke out and became the impact forward for Hamilton in their single win during the week. After scoring his first goal of the season and the only goal of the game for Hamilton during a 4-1 loss to the Chicago Wolves on Tuesday night, Avtsin was held off the scoresheet as the Bulldogs were blown out on Thursday 8-0 by the Grand Rapids Griffins but his talent emerged to salvage the Bulldogs week on Sunday. Avtsin recorded three assists to help Hamilton to a 5-2 win over the Binghamton Senators, his first three-point game in the AHL to date. Avtsin was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in the 4th round, 109th overall in the 2009 Entry Draft.
On The Radar: LW Olivier Archambeault scored a goal and two assists during the week. C Michael Bournival is expected to return from his shoulder injury this week. G Peter Delmas is 3-1-0 in the ECHL this season. D Darren Dietz had a goal and two assists while going +7, raising him to +19 on his season, none better amongst all defencemen in the WHL, Dietz is also tied for defensive scoring on his team. C Louis Leblanc scored two goals during the week. D Jarred Tinordi collected an assist and went +3.
Question Marks: LW Alain Berger and C Joonas Nattinen will be relegated to the bubble category until their seasons improve. C Gabriel Dumont is expected to be out for two to three weeks from a shoulder injury. D Brendon Nash is out recovering from shoulder surgery in October and is expected to miss at least three more months.
