The Three Stars of the Week
1. D Morgan Ellis has emerged as the premiere prospect of the week with his most impressive production to date. The 2nd-year captain of the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles had both the highest-scoring game and highest-scoring week of his junior career. Ellis would collect two assists on Wednesday including having a hand in the game-winning goal to earn a 4-3 win over PEI Rocket. On Saturday, Ellis would have a career night as he scored two goals and two assists, including the eventual game-winning goal in a wild 9-4 victory for Cape Breton over the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies. Ellis was held without a point on Sunday however in the team’s only loss of the week in a rematch with Rouyn-Noranda. Ellis’s week raised him to 7 goals, 11 assists in 21 games, equal to half of his points production in 65 games last season and he is only one goal away from tying his goals production from last year. Ellis is now 10th overall in defensive scoring in the QMJHL. Ellis was drafted in the 4th round, 117th overall by the Montreal Canadiens in the 2010 Entry Draft.
2. RW Brendan Gallagher is no stranger to the honours list, Gallagher receives attention for a 5-point week over a three game in three night schedule. Gallagher began his week representing Team WHL in the 5th game of the WHL Super Series where had been named the captain for the game. Gallagher went without a point in the game, a victory for team WHL but his absence from the scoresheet seemed to light a fire under the high-scoring winger. Gallagher would score a goal and three assists as his team routed the Victoria Royals 11-3 on Friday night, it was his 4th game of the season recording at least 4 points in a game. Gallagher failed to score a point in regulation or close in overtime, but he did open up the shootout with one of two shootout markers by his team to bring in a victory on Saturday over the Everett Silvertips. Gallagher would tally a single assist as his team lost 4-1 to the Kootenay Ice on Sunday night. Gallagher’s scoring raised him to 6th overall in the WHL in points and he is 5th in the league in goals. Gallagher was drafted in the 5th round, 147th overall by the Montreal Canadiens in the 2010 Entry Draft.
3. LW Steve Quailer has spent two years working on a return from a devastating ACL tear that ended his sophomore NCAA season before it began and severely hampered his previous season. In his first season back from injury, Quailer scored a mere 3 goals and 10 assists in 2010-11 over 38 games, he seems set this year to put such things behind him. Quailer scored two goals and an assist in a pair of wins for Northeastern University over the weekend. Quailer has now scored 3 goals and 5 assists over 10 games. Quailer was drafted in the 3rd round, 86th overall by the Montreal Canadiens in the 2008 Entry Draft.
On The Radar: D Nathan Beaulieu had three assists on his week. D Mac Bennett scored his 3rd goal of the season, passing his previous season mark of 2 goals and matched his previous season output of 10 points in 19 fewer games. C Michael Bournival returned from injury and delivered a clutch performance in his 2nd game back, scoring the tying goal and than the overtime marker to bring in a victory for his team. D Scott Kishel has been promoted to Habs Future based on an outstanding season start, he has scored 1 goal and 11 assists in 14 games in NCAA hockey this season for University of Minnesota-Duluth.
Question Marks: LW Olivier Archambeault has no points in 3 of his last 4 games and is a team-worst -12. C Gabriel Dumont is out with a shoulder injury. RW Danny Kristo has 1 assist in his last 6 games. D Brendon Nash is out indefinitely after having shoulder surgery in October.
