The Three Stars of the Week
1. RW Brendan Gallagher continues to drive home the point that not only is he the MVP of Vancouver Giants but that he is one of the most terrifying offensive players in the Western Hockey League. Gallagher had his most dominant week in his career to date with a 10-point performance over a three games in three night’s schedule. Gallagher would score a goal and two assists in a 5-3 loss on Friday night, but he didn’t let that discourage him for a second. On Saturday night, Gallagher keyed a 5-1 victory on Saturday night by assisting on the eventual game-winning goal and adding the 3rd and 4th goals for insurance. To prove he wasn’t tired, Gallagher scored the initial and game-winning goal in a 5-0 victory on Sunday, than scored another goal and added two assists for good measure. Gallagher’s weekend also shattered his single-season offensive records, surpassing his old season-best marks of 41 goals and 40 assists that he reached in 72 games last season. Gallagher has now scored 43 goals and 44 assists in 61 games. Gallagher’s scoring pace has raised him to 4th overall in WHL scoring, 2nd overall in goals and since the calendar flipped to 2011, Gallagher has scored eighteen goals and twenty two assists in twenty three games. Brendan Gallagher was drafted in the 5th round, 147th overall in the 2010 Entry Draft.
2. C Louis Leblanc is working harder and harder to prove that his scoring slump is firmly behind him, enjoying an 8-point week with the Montreal Juniors. Leblanc would score the opening goal in a wild 7-5 win on Wednesday night and then would add two assists which included setting up the game-winning goal. Leblanc would score a goal in an eventual 3-2 loss on Friday night, but that just seemed to be incentive for him to make sure his team didn’t lose on Sunday on national television. Leblanc transformed into an absolute power play menace on Sunday night in front of a national TV audience, he scored his first hat trick of the season and added one assist all on the power play, which kept his team in the game as they grinded out a 6-5 win in the shootout. Leblanc’s scoring spree of late has made him the leading points per game player on his team at a rate of 1.2 and is two points out from leading the team in scoring and the player ahead of him has played nine more games. Louis Leblanc was drafted in the 1st round, 18th overall in the 2009 Entry Draft.
3. RW Aaron Palushaj scored three goals this week to merit attention as he hunts for offensive consistency in a year where he’s battled ankle injury. Palushaj opened his scoring with two goals on Friday night, an insurance marker and than an empty-net goal in a 4-1 victory for the Hamilton Bulldogs when they played for the Montreal crowd in a special Bell Centre game on Friday night to a crowd just short of fifteen thousand. Palushaj would score his 3rd goal of the week as he attempted to force a comeback from a 4-1 deficit on Sunday afternoon, but that would be the end of the Bulldogs scoring as the game ended in a 5-2 loss. Palushaj’s 36 points this season has him 2nd in team scoring amongst active players in Hamilton. Aaron Palushaj was acquired in the trade that sent Matt D’Agostini to St. Louis and was drafted in the 2nd round, 44th overall in the 2007 Entry Draft.
Worthy Mentions: D Mac Bennett scored his 2nd goal of the season with the University of Michigan Wolverines. D Morgan Ellis scored his 8th goal of the season, doubling his goals production from last season. Bubble prospect RW Mark MacMillan has scored six assists in his first two playoff games in the BCHL Junior A league. D Brendon Nash scored a goal and assist to raise him to 25 points in his rookie AHL season. D Jarred Tinordi has reached 10 assists in the OHL this season.
Question Marks: RW Alexander Avtsin has only one goal in his last 22 games. D Brett Festerling is off with an upper-body injury. RW Danny Kristo is recovering from frostbite on his right foot.
