Habs Future for the Week of November 28th

The Three Stars of the Week

1. RW Brendan Gallagher continues to be the highest-flying offensive prospect this season for the Montreal organization and one of the most dominant players in the Western Hockey League. Gallagher would begin his week in the midst of a ‘slump’ going by his standards as he had gone 4 straight games without a goal. In his first game of the week, Gallagher collected two assists on Tuesday night in an eventual 4-3 shootout win over the Moose Jaw Warriors. The following night, Gallagher proved once more to be one of the most dominant scorers in the WHL as he completed a hat trick in the course of 6 minutes and 18 seconds. The hat trick was not enough however as the Giants lose by an eventual score of 5-4 to the Brandon Wheat Kings. This was only the second time all year that a multi-point game by Gallagher had not resulted in a Giants victory. Gallagher would tally an assist and later an empty-net goal to help seal a 4-1 win victory on Friday over the Regina Pats. Gallagher went without a point in his final game of the week on Saturday, a 3-2 victory over the Swift Current Broncos. Gallagher’s hat trick carries a rather special significance as well. In the first three years and 190 games of Brendan Gallagher’s WHL career with the Vancouver Giants, he had three games where he scored at least three goals. Since he has begun what is almost certainly his final season in the WHL, he has completed the hat trick three times in a period of 22 games and 51 total days. Gallagher is currently 6th overall in league scoring in the WHL and 5th in goals with 23 goals, 21 assists in 27 games. Gallagher was drafted in the 5th round, 147th overall in the 2010 Entry Draft.

2. LW Steve Quailer continues to be the comeback story in the Canadiens farm system this year, after his potential seemed to be only fading away for close to two years at Northeastern University. With time ticking on Quailer’s professional hockey prospects, the young winger has embarked on a remarkable pace of late. Quailer matched his career high of 3 points in a game from last week with a similar effort on Friday, adding three assists in a clear rout of Notre Dame in a stunning 9-2 victory for Northeastern. Quailer would score his 5th goal of the season, the game-winner in a much closer rematch with Notre Dame the following night in 2-1 victory. Quailer is currently riding a 6-game points streak of 4 goals, 7 assists over six games, which is the longest any Canadiens prospect has held a point streak this season. Quailer currently leads his team in scoring with 5 goals, 11 assists. Quailer was drafted in the 3rd round, 86th overall by the Montreal Canadiens in the 2008 Entry Draft.

3. D Nathan Beaulieu spent his week as he has his last few with the Saint John Sea Dogs working his way up the defensive scoring ranks in the Quebec Major Junior league. Beaulieu started his first game of the week without a point as he was held off the score sheet in a 2-1 victory for Saint John over Moncton on Tuesday. Beaulieu rather dramatically added to his scoring totals on Saturday night as he scored the overtime winning goal for Saint John over Shawinigan, his 8th of the season in a 3-2 victory. In a rather tough loss that snapped a 15-game winning streak at home for Saint John, Beaulieu added two assists to his scoring totals in an eventual 8-3 loss and remarkably, finished the game a +1, the only player on Saint John to do so. Beaulieu is currently pacing for a career high in goals with more than half his season remaining, he is only 4 goals away from tying his career best of 12 in a season. Beaulieu is currently 5th overall in defensive scoring in the Quebec league with 8 goals, 18 assists over 29 games. Beaulieu was drafted in the 1st round, 17th overall by the Montreal Canadiens in the 2011 Entry Draft.

On The Radar: C Michaƫl Bournival scored a goal and two assists in two games. D Morgan Ellis tallied three assists to reach his 3rd consecutive 20-point season in the QMJHL. RW Danny Kristo scored a goal and assist over the weekend, with 8 goals in 16 games he has tied his goal output from last season over 34 games. C Daniel Pribyl scored a goal as he returned to action in the Czech First League and has been named to the preliminary roster for the Czech World Junior Championship team.

Question Marks: LW Olivier Archambeault has not scored a point in 6 of his last 9 games. C Andreas Engqvist has a knee injury and is recovering with Montreal D Brendon Nash is out indefinitely after having shoulder surgery in October. C Dustin Walsh is out with a leg injury. RW Maxim Trunev has been demoted to the bubble due to lack of production.
