Habs Future for the Week of October 31st

The Three Stars of the Week

1. RW Brendan Gallagher continues to be one of the most dangerous scoring threats in the Western Hockey League this week, while setting the pace of the success of the Vancouver Giants. Gallagher’s drive to fill the net led to a week of five goals and three assists over three games while maintaining his march for a potential fifty goals in fifty games. Gallagher would spend Tuesday night playing his role for Vancouver to perfection as he ensured victory in their 4-2 win over the Seattle Thunderbirds. Gallagher recorded his 2nd hat trick of his season, the fifth of his WHL career and added an assist for a four-point night in the win. Gallagher was held to a single assist in the following game on Friday in a 2-1 loss to the Victoria Royals only to exact revenge the following night. Gallagher would score the first two goals for Vancouver to keep pace with the Royals who would end up jumping ahead to a 3-2 lead, before the Giants rallied and Gallagher would add an assist on the insurance marker in a 5-3 victory. Gallagher’s scoring places him at 3rd overall in the WHL in goals, 7th overall in scoring with all players ahead of him having played at least two more games. Gallagher was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in the 5th round, 147th overall in the 2010 Entry Draft.

2. C Dustin Walsh makes his premiere in Habs Future with a notable weekend. Walsh seems quite keen as a 3rd year player with Dartmouth Big Green to become their leading source of offence this season and so far he has not failed to disappoint. Walsh scored two goals and three assists over the weekend to become the scoring leader of his team as his points helped pace the team to two straight wins. Walsh would score the first goal of his season on Friday night as Dartmouth rallied to come back from multiple deficits, before finally assisting on the game-winning goal in a 5-4 victory over Quinnipiac. Walsh would further his scoring efforts on Saturday with a goal and two assists, scoring the initial go-ahead goal for his team, than assisting on the game-winning goal once again and then on the insurance marker in a 5-3 victory over Princeton. Walsh was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in the 6th round, 169th overall by the Montreal Canadiens in the 2009 Entry Draft.

3. RW Aaron Palushaj has returned to Hamilton to help fill in the scoring gap left behind following the trade of Brock Trotter and has so far been the only consistent source of scoring in the lineup, scoring a goal and four assists on his week. As the Bulldogs struggled for a win, Palushaj would add two assists to help the team gain at least an overtime point in an eventual 3-2 loss to the Abbotsford Heat on Tuesday night. Palushaj’s efforts would go unrewarded once again on Friday night as his two assists were not quite enough to complete a comeback as the Bulldogs fell once again 4-2 to the Houston Aeros, their ousters from the 2011 AHL Playoffs. Palushaj’s first goal of the season however was perfectly timed as it was enough for the Bulldogs to snap a 4-game losing streak in a 1-0 victory on Saturday night against the Lake Erie Monsters. Palushaj has one goal, seven assists over six games in Hamilton, tied for the team lead in scoring. Palushaj was drafted by the St Louis Blues in the 2nd round, 44th overall in the 2007 Entry Draft and was acquired by Montreal for Matt D’Agostini.

Worthy Mentions: LW Olivier Archambeault scored a goal and two assists on the week. D Mac Bennett scored goals in consecutive games over the weekend, including the game-winner on Saturday to match his previous-season output of 2G over 32GP, this was just his 10th game of the season. D Darren Dietz added a goal and assist to his scoring totals while holding at +12 on his season, +8 better than all other skaters on his team save his defensive partner who is +13. D Greg Pateryn had four assists in two games over the weekend. D Jarred Tinordi returned from injury and recorded one assist while going +2 in his first two games back.

Question Marks: LW Olivier Archambeault is a team-worst -10 with Drummondville despite being 4th in points. RW Alexander Avtsin and LW Alain Berger are close to falling into bubble status with only 1A on their seasons. C Michael Bournival is out with a shoulder injury and is expected to miss at least two more weeks. C Gabriel Dumont has a shoulder injury and is expected to miss at least three weeks. RW Danny Kristo has only one assist in his last four games. D Brendon Nash is recovering from shoulder surgery in early October and is not expected to return until at least February.

Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) Report: The Kontinental Hockey League is the professional hockey league of Russia, many Russian players first play professionally there before joining the NHL.
