The Three Stars of the Week
1. RW Brendan Gallagher should come as no surprise to many as being the headlining member of this week’s Three Stars selections and as usual, the straw that stirs the Vancouver Giants. Gallagher’s best work was seen early, the first game of the week was easily his best of the young season. In a nearly single-handed domination of the Victoria Royals, Gallagher would record a hat trick and add two assists to have the second five-point game of his WHL career, it was also his 4th career hat trick. Gallagher later added an assist on his next game, an eventual 3-2 loss and then had his points streak of 5 straight games snapped on Saturday night in a 5-1 loss. Gallagher is 9th in the WHL in goals scored and everyone ahead of him has played at least two more games. Gallagher was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in the 5th round, 147th overall in the 2010 Entry Draft.
2. RW Danny Kristo has begun his season with North Dakota on a quick pace and seems extremely determined to set his sophomore slump behind him. He collected a single assist on Friday night against the University of Maine in a 3-1 win for North Dakota helping on the insurance goal. On Saturday night, Kristo’s offence was essential to North Dakota avoiding a loss as he assisted on the first goal and scored two goals himself as the team managed a 3-3 tie against Maine in their back-to-back series. Kristo now has two goals and five assists in four games this season, leads North Dakota in points and is 14th overall in national NCAA scoring. Kristo was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in the 2nd round, 56th overall in the 2008 Entry Draft.
3. C Brock Trotter was seen as a player who would have to carry the offence for the Hamilton Bulldogs this season and so far, has not shied from the task. In Hamilton’s second game of the season, Trotter helped create the team’s first three goals of the game, picking up three assists in a 4-0 victory for Hamilton on the road over the St John’s IceCaps in their home opener. He was held without a point in Hamilton’s 6-2 loss on the following game against the IceCaps however. Trotter’s three-point game raised his scoring totals to two goals, five assists, good enough for first in Hamilton scoring by four points and 13th overall in AHL scoring. Trotter was signed as a free agent by Montreal in February of 2008.
Worthy Mentions: D Nathan Beaulieu was named an Alternate Captain of the Saint John Sea Dogs this week, becoming the sixth Canadiens CHL prospect to wear a letter with his team. C Philip DeSimone collected two goals on the week, his first two points and goals in the AHL. D Morgan Ellis scored his 3rd goal of the season to continue on a point per game season pace. C Joonas Nattinen scored his first goal in his first career AHL game.
Question Marks: C Michael Bournival is out with an upper-body injury that may have him missing a month. C Louis Leblanc is recovering from off-season shoulder surgery. D Brendon Nash is recovering from shoulder surgery in early October. D Jarred Tinordi after suffering a cut in a fight which he lost badly is likely out for 1-2 weeks. RW Maxim Trunev is without a point in his last 7 KHL games.
